Today is Barack Obama’s 100th day in office and the one thing these last hundred days have shown me, if not the world, is that 2 Black people can love each other. The Obama’s have changed the face of America. It has shown me a glimpse into what a family can be. My home girl and I recently had a discussion of Barack Obama’s importance. She even went as far to say that sometimes she wish he didn’t get elected.

I explained to her that The Obama’s provide hope for those who need it. I won’t go into conspiracy theories, so let’s just say we have a lot of distractions. Jolie’s new foreign baby, Rihanna’s new man, Ray-J’s new jumpoff and fears your bank might close shop and move to Finland. Over these last 100 days we have seen, campaign promises kept, broken and amended. Yet the most important thing these last 100 days have shown is this. It has shown the little kid from the ghetto who is growing up in a single parent home, that real love does exist.

It has giving the dad who is trying to be there for his kids from a far, because he doesn’t get along with his children’s mother. That his kids deserve the same things Obama’s kids have and that she should work even harder for his kids to achieve these thing. It shows us that with love all things are possible. Here is a glimpse at some of the most loving and telling moments from these last 100 days.

“We were a silent, hidden thought in the folds of oblivion, and we have become a voice that causes the heavens to tremble.”

There is no doubt that due to the work of Martin Luther King and other civil rights activist, that Jan 20th 2009 would not have been possible. The swearing in of the nation’s first Black President, not a descendant of slaves, but Black nonetheless. Tuesday in my extreme joy, I sent out a tweet stating that when you go to sleep and close your eyes do so, knowing that the most powerful man in the world is a Black man. So which someone replies “Wrong, MLK was that first…” I paraphrase, but basically he stated Martin Luther King was the most powerful man in the world when he was alive. With all due respect to Dr. King, but he was far from the most powerful man in the world..

What do you think, Who was more powerful? Martin Luther King or Barack Obama?

Simply Beautiful. I can’t imagine what was going through Beyonce’s mind at the moment all I know is she looked like she wanted to break down. As the first couple danced they panned the room and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. It was simply beautiful. I only wish she would let me love her like Barack Obama loves Michelle Obama. If you don’t have B’s version of At Last here you go.

Obama’s Remarks at the Neighboorhood ball

“This campaign was organized neighborhood by neighborhood,” said Obama, calling himself a neighborhood kind of guy – at a ball in the Washington Convention Center where tickets were dispensed for little cost to a lot of people. He cut his teeth on neighborhood work, he told the crowd.

“And if you think about it, neighborhood starts with neighbor,” Obama said. “This ball is the one which captures best, I think, the spirit of this campaign… We are going to need you… because together we are going to change America.” Source

It’s a pretty big accomplishment for kid from the projects to be making so many big moves. After all Jay-Z is in the new President’s Ipod.

One New York paper is actually asking for Obama to offer Hip Hop a little bit of help of it’s own stating the since Obama will be the first President who has

Jay-Z and Kanye West on his iPod, the first one who speaks the culture’s language, the first one who embraces its mannerisms, from fist-bumping with his wife to throwing his hands in the air and waving like he just don’t care…

Could a hip hop bail out be in the works?

The Newsday article informs us that, While sales of rock music dropped only 6.5 percent last year, hip-hop sales dropped nearly 20 percent, and hip hop is now the sixth most popular music on the charts just beating gospel music. Could a hip hop bailout really help the struggling industry? While hip hop has it’s bright spots willing to usher in change, it’s has got so bad that even BET has pretty much turned it’s back on the music. Remember a few years ago when you could turn on BET and catch all your favorite videos from 10am until 9pm? Now they show reruns of College Hill, Hell Date and the Wayan’s Bros. rather than the latest blinged out rapper rapping about booty butt cheeks.

Have you ever stopped and asked yourself why has hip hop fell off? Leatrice of Atlanta and owner of Brown Girl Excursions believes it’s “because right now artists lack focus. They hone in on dollars and miss the purity of creativity and passion for the audience” I agree with her, but on the other hand as an artist it takes focus to even be in this game. Shaunette of Florida claims “the masses are complacent with mediocrity such as Solider Boy, Plies, and any other commercial n*gga out there and those examples are purely far from hip-hop. But yet they sell the most..Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip don’t sell as much” So, what does that tell you about society? Even though what people believe is good music doesn’t sell the most, there is still an almost unanimous cry for good music. A friend of mine said, they like a few songs, but no one has yet to create anything that makes me want to be a fan.

I think that’s it, you have to be a fan of someone’s music in order to go out and purchase their album. If I’m not a fan, honestly I’m just going to download it and bump a few songs on my ipod. For the sake of argument let’s say that Barack Obama just gave the industry execs the multibillion dollar bailout package what would they do with it?

I believe the execs would spend it on marketing for their friends, cousins and their man’s an em’ who has a little flow and the ability to rhyme words that don’t go together. I believe they would take half the money to buy more cars, jets, vocoders and skinny jeans. Instead of investing in instruments, voice lessons, teaching artist how to read and write music notes and also investing in the community to show them the full range of the arts. A hip hop bailout can be invested in learning the struggle of the people who buy music, which can go a long way to produce music that will actually make people want to listen. Sure we want to dance, sure we need a theme song to f*ck hoes, drink and smoke too, but we also need music to put on after we’ve had a hard day of work. We need a song that captures the feeling we get when our boss has us do something dumb, when the rent has to be paid late, as well as a nice respectful song about how much we love our significant other. We need these things just as much as we need anthems about getting drunk and forgetting what we did. We need this regardless if they are sung by someone wearing skinny jeans and using a vocoder.

Fact is we need more than just one type of music from an artist. We need an artist who is going to cover all these topics because on monday I want to relax, Wednesday I want to love my lady and by Friday I’m ready to hit the club spend a little money getting drunk with people I don’t know. I have a plethora of emotions, wants and needs and I want an artist who can capture all of those things in an album. Take Tupac, he told the ladies to keep their head up and then told the ladies hey I get around. He shot 5 people no reason and then led a revolution of millions. There are no boundaries to music or life, but all too often our favorite artist are put in a box to keep them from reaching their full potential and us from reaching in our pockets to spend money.

So should hip hop receive a bail out? I say no, they’ll just misuse it, and produce even more cookie cutter artist who wouldn’t know what creativity is if it hit them in the jaw with the force of a Mike Tyson punch in 1989.

As my good friend and colleague Kandis Knight said via twitter “Greed made alot of people loose touch with reality.”

When Obama’s journey to the presidency first began, you couldn’t tell Black people anything. All I heard was he isn’t Black enough, or America isn’t ready for a Black president. Yet, after a long and hard fought battle we are only a short time away from watching the nation swear in it’s first African-American president. It’s a beautiful thing, it truly is. Not everyone can’t make it to DC to be there for the inauguration, but if you’re in the NY area you can still be apart of history on Jan 20th and have your picture taken with the President. Well sort of according to Madame Tussauds website:

Stand face-to-face and have your historical photo taken with President Barack Obama. A former United States Senator from Illinois and civil rights attorney; January 20, 2009 he will become the nation’s first African American to be a elected President of the United States. Join us as we celebrate history in the making and launch a historical president set in a replica of the Oval Office!

I think I might have to hit this up on Monday.

A photographer was told there was an interesting Freshman on campus and it was no other than Barack Obama.
Chance Encounter
In 1980, when Obama was a freshman at Occidental College in Los Angeles, he was approached by an aspiring photographer named Lisa Jack, who asked him if he would be willing to pose for some black and white photographs that she could use in her portfolio.

I’ve got my hands on a bit of Barack Obama’s speech tonight. I must say this is going to be an amazing part of history we are about to witness. Check it out below.

“America, we are better than these last eight years. We are a better country than this.”
“The Republican nominee, John McCain, has worn the uniform of our country with bravery and distinction, and for that we owe him our gratitude and respect.”

“I will cut taxes – cut taxes – for 95% of all working families. Because in an economy like this, the last thing we should do is raise taxes on the middle-class.”

“And for the sake of our economy, our security, and the future of our planet, I will set a clear goal as President: in ten years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East.”

“As President, I will tap our natural gas reserves, invest in clean coal technology, and find ways to safely harness nuclear power. I’ll help our auto companies re-tool, so that the fuel-efficient cars of the future are built right here in America. I’ll make it easier for the American people to afford these new cars. And I’ll invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy – wind power and solar power and the next generation of biofuels; an investment that will lead to new industries and five million new jobs that pay well and can’t ever be outsourced.”

“We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don’t tell me that Democrats won’t defend this country.”

“I will end this war in Iraq responsibly, and finish the fight against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. I will rebuild our military to meet future conflicts. But I will also renew the tough, direct diplomacy that can prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.”

“And I will restore our moral standing so that America is once more the last, best hope for all who are called to the cause of freedom, who long for lives of peace, and who yearn for a better future.”

Attention America, people “cuss” Bernie Mac is under fire after the Obama campaign condemned the use some foul language when he was introducing Obama at a fund raiser in Chicago.

Mac, speaking to about 600 donors at a Chicago hotel, joked that he did not understand why Obama would want to run for president.

“I’m proud of him because politics is dirty, especially with Republicans,” he said. “People like rumors. They are going to say things like, you know, ‘You was in the club with Lil’ Kim and you and Kanye West got in a fist fight.’ ” adding “Being a president is tough ’cause you’re not just running the country. You got to run your family too,” Mac said. “Having a black first lady is different. You’re still going to have to do the dishes and the laundry and all that … ‘You got to pick up the kids. You didn’t pick up the kids?’

At one point a heckler [yea they have hecklers at political events] asked demanded that Mac get off the stage after a particularly crude joke. It was at that time that Barack both rejected and denounced Mac… Just kidding. Obama told Mac that he does not condone the statements and believes what was said was inappropriate.
