Tat Tat Tatted Up

In this day and age, everywhere you turn someone has a tattoo somewhere on their body. Which is cool because I have 2 small ones myself and on my way to a third next week, but it seems that is getting out of control, especially in the rap community. Take for instance Lil Wayne. I love Weezy but when I can’t even see your skin color because you have so many tattoos covering your body from your face to your feet…that’s a problem.

I remember him saying on 106th and Park recently that he only remembered his first three tattoos and then after that he lost count. How is that possible? Why would you want so many tattoos that you couldn’t even count? Don’t they lose their meaning if you have hundreds of tattoos? I don’t want to be hard on just the men only, my ladies are no stranger to tattoos as well. I’ve never been a big fan of huge tattoos on women. i.e. Monica, Keyshia Cole, Tiny, Mary J. Blige and so on. It doesn’t look good when you are wearing a fancy dress to a premiere or a party and you have this huge tattoo on your arm & legs. So my question is, how many tattoos are too many for men? And how big should a women get her tattoo and where?

Well..I think that depends on what u plan on doing for a living. I have 2 tatts myself. One medium sized one on my upper thigh and a small one on my low back. When I decided to get these tatts, I kept in mind that I would like to be able to cover them if I'm in a professional setting or at a formal event.
I think men & women can have as many as they like, h/e with women “too much” is considered overkill and looks horrible. Some ppl see it as art and their body is the canvas. I stopped at my 2nd tatt and don't regret getting either of them. Although my tatt on my thigh was done kinda on the big side and I was a lot smaller than I am now so I kinda grew into my tatt and it 'fits' now…lol.

  2. wow…a post of my own heart. I am the proud owner of body art…I have 4 tats myself and i got them all within about a year of each other. All of them reflect me and my ideas on life and myself, but they ARE addicting and I plan to keep going for quite a while.

Now I'm not one to get what I call 'hood' tattooes…those all over my arms, chest, hands, etc. I have what I call 'sexy girl' tats…ones on places that men like to kiss and touch, and they can all be covered with simple typical clothing (tshirt and shorts…except the one on my foot…gotta rock some Jay's to cover that one!)

I love my men tatted up and to me there is so such thing as a dude having too many, but women…i guess that's my double standard. tats make someone look rugged…like they have an attitude and an edge to them…but that depends on the positioning and size and all that….I think women should embrace tattoos and get them where they want, but stay classy. I love the one on Keyshia's neck area, same with all Rhianna's tats…but Lil Mo? Jackie-O? Faith? Mary J? Monica? all them chicks are straight hood, and it shows!

I agree! Just think about your future. I have 3 and they can all be covered if necessary. I think it is absolutely horrible for a woman to have a large tattoo on their arm or on they neck or on the outside of their calf. I have a small one on the inside of my ankle and everyone looks at it. I couldn't imagine having a big A one on the outside of my leg. ALSO…..think about WHAT you should get on your body. For instance don't get a ni**** name tattooed on ur neck.

I have two that I got when I was young, in places you can't see unless i'm naked. And I wish I could remove one of them actually, my dude doesn't have any and I think it's soooo sexy, his skin is beautiful in it's un touched form. I love it! I keep talking him out of getting one.

Big ass tats on females arms, legs, and chest are soooo ugly, when mary and keyshia have evening gowns on with those big tats it takes away from the look, In my opinion.

Question- Why do people tattoo thier own names on themselves??

  5. Sugar Tits says:

I have five, going to get my sixth while in MI-YAYO this weekend. I say it is a personal preference. If you find something or someone unattractive don't fuck with them.

  6. i got my name tatted on my lower back because I was having a serious crisis in remembering who I truly was…not that i cant remember my own name, but sometimes in the hustle and bustle of life, relationships, work and schol, you forget to take pride in the things that make you uniquely 'you'…that sounds corny but I needed a way to remind myself every single day that no matter what bullshit i go thru, im still the beautful diva Chelsea that my mama raised me to be…not “hey bitch', 'fuck you hoe!' “shawty” that ppl sometimes refer to women like me as…

plus i aint gettin no nigga name on me…might as well get the name of a muhfukka imma love for LIFE! lol…real talk tho!

  7. BlogXilla says:

Yeah Jackie O is the worst when it comes to the tats… I think she got a few of them in the county or something that's isn't sexy at all. I think my favorite spot for a tat is on the neck, and the foot. OMG i love foot tattoos they drive me wild

  8. BlogXilla says:

I'm in the process of talking “my friend” into tatting my blog address on her neck for my birthday!! lol

  9. BlogXilla says:

I would agree I wouldn't mind a lot of tats on a woman if they dont look like jail tattoo's and as bad at this sounds Tats just look better on light skinned people. I interviewed this video chick and she had about 60 % of her body inked. It ain't look that bad.

  10. VIChick says:

I have 4 tatts, the first one I got at the age of 17 back in the 90's. All my tatts have some sort of meaning in my life, but I choose to have them in places where if I had to cover them then I could. I HATE to see a woman that has a tatt on her neck. Even though it looks cute it is unprofessional. I have a friend that is only 23 and has 13 tatts, BIG ones too. Hell she just got her 14th one and she wants to be a flight attendant. I told her that no airline will hire her with all those tatts. I think some people just put tatts on because it has become part of the culture. In my high school I was the first person male or female to have a tatt, then I everyone started doing it. ( In my Virgin Islands accent) Everybody jus ah follow fashion.

  11. LexAve says:

Call me ignorant…whatever but dudes with “a milli” tatts are just dumb mo fo's…how 'bout invest that money into something valuable? Do you really think you're gonna look sexy at age 60 all tatted up?! And for the ladies, please stop covering up the bullet wounds with silly tatts. the shit is straight up tacky. nevermind why ya even got bullet wounds in the first place. One or two small ones is cool but putting a freakin' blog on ya arm or leg is just plain STUPID! people forget that unless you shit money and can afford tattoo removals, it's a permanent stamp FOR LIFE! SO THINK BEFORE U INK! I like tatts, I got a tramp stamp myself. Do I regret it…HELL MUTHA EFFn' YEAH! Will I remove it? soon as I pay off my student loan, YES!

  12. IFavorMe says:

I abosutely LOVE tattoo's!!!! But, I do feel that there is a limit. Prime example….Lil Wayne. he looks a hot ass mess with all those tats on him. when u start losing count of how many you have or you beign to run outta places to put them, then they have just turned into something to do, instead of being something meaningful. i have 7 and they all have a meaning. and since i work in a corporate setting, i chose to get them in places that can be easily covered. my boyfried has 8. we have this lil competition goin on to see who will end up with the most, but i'm gonna let him win, cuz I don't want too many.

  13. I have one that I got when I turned 30 of a bumble bee. Well it was supposed to be a bumble bee but the guy who was doing the tat stated I was a queen so he made it into a queen bee. I plan on getting two more both to symbolize my mottos on life. I hate big ugly tattoos and tattoos without meaning. If you are going to put something permanent on your body it should have a profound meaning to you. I originally wanted to the saying “According to the laws of nature the bumble bee should not be able to carry it's own weight but the bumble bee flies anyway”. I fly anyway

  14. Shayna' says:

i think that before anyone decides to get a tatt they need to figure out what their career path is going be be.
if you got a huge butterfly tatt on ya chest in between ya breast, good luck at your corporate america ijob nterview as well as dudes; think twice about that tatt on the neck. (although that is oh so sexy).
i think its cool for females to have tatts if they small or maybe one big one in discrete places, i think its sexy.
( i got 3; roman numerals on my wrist, 3 stars on my ear, and 3 lilies on my back)
and get tatts that mean something, aint nothing worse than gettin a tatt that dont mean shit and regretting it later in life.

  15. Shayna' says:

and ladies can we please stop w. the jailhouse tatts on the arm.
not everyone can rock em and still look cute.
    smh @ you.

  16. Stephanie says:

A male friend of mine got 2 huge tats of stars on top of his shoulders, one on each….he said it something's sexual. Like what?

  17. ANuJS says:

    Here you go again….sigh

  18. your in luck Xilla, cuz I have a sexy foot tattoo as i mentioned before…lol…i'm just putting it out there. do with it what you will…literally…

    lol…shame on me!

  19. damn….a dark skin sister cant get no kinda love in this world…its ok tho…i love myself enough for everybody and my tats are sexy as hell…ppl are always askin me about them and jockin my ISH! lol…

  20. ANuJS says:

The foot…hot. The neck..not. (@ least not for a woman)

  21. StraightShitNoChaser says:

No, TO YOU, they look better on light-skinned people. You are truly color-struck huh?

  22. Sir Jones says:

The ugliest tat I've EVA seen on a female was a wine glass on her arm with with her nick name under it. On top of that, I think the stem on that shit was crooked! The actual female was decent, but the tat made her look gutterbutt. The sexiest tat I've seen on a woman was along the side of her whole back. She had those flowers in all different colors. Lets just say when things got poppin' and she'd sweat a little, her back would look like a canvas. DAMN.

  23. what? says:

I have four tatts that go from my hip up to the top of my waist line, they are hidden unless I'm naked. If i were to ever get a visible tatt to the public it would be small and tasteful…big ass dark tatts on arms or legs is NOT tha biz, it doesn't look very lady like!!!!!

  24. what? says:

Oh and my tatts are brightly colored hawaiian flowers

  25. i have a tattoo on my lower back and its pretty big
…well at least thats what people said for my first and only tattoo.
BUT i placed it in a spot where it can easily be covered if i wanted or it needed to be.
i wouldnt ever get a tattoo that couldnt be covered if i wanted it to be.
seeing that it's so hard to get a job nowadays being that america is in recession
(thanks to eight years of bush)
i wouldnt get a tattoo anywhere so that my future employer could not hire me even if i do have an impressive resume :)

First off I think that the hip-hop community is not the only community where some seem to get a little out of hand with the tats…look and the NBA players, skateboarders, and rockers. I must agree that a few are ok. I am the proud owner of two myself but when your have so many that they all seem to run together and some of the work looks like straight jail house work it looks bad.

As for the ladies PLEASE, PLEASE leave the hood stuff alone this means the neck and chest area. The tats on the calf where one on the ones I have is, is very sexy when you have on a dress and if you have nice arms it looks nice too but keep its sexy (not to big) and make sure the are work is tight and you can look good with your tat no matter what your wearing and where your going..

@blogxilla, who are you to judge. don't do “whitie's” job for him ok!! we need Africa. Our beautiful dark ancestors! WE DON'T REMEMBER WHO WE ARE NOR DO WE CARE. it's a shame but to each their own I guess. i think tats look so sexy on men, especially on their backs! I once saw this girl who had eyes on the front of her chest….a hot mess to say the least. i think tats can be tasteful on women when they are put in places where they are in the right places.

  39. I have 6. all meaningful. each represents part of my life i want to remember for the rest of my life. all were impulsive decisions, but i never regretted any of them.

i have one on the inside of my left ankle (Cancer Zodiac symbol) cuz it is me to a tee. i have the infinity symbol on the inside of my left wrist but it is hot pink, so folks think it's henna. on the inside of my right wrist is the word STRENGTH as it is something that i needed as a reminder of just who and what i am. it looks like a birthmark from far away cuz it is a baby blue. i have 2 medium ones on my back. on my lower right hand side is the map of my homeland (Guyana) with the flag on the inside. between my shoulder blades is a heart with wings enveloping it and a halo. it's a memorial to my baby brother and i wanted it there for any and everyone to see, just so he is not forgotten. my last, most recent, is the Celtic Triquetra (mind, body and soul working as one) as that is what i wanted to focus on at this point in my life.

every one of my tattoos have been at a turning point in my life and i refuse to hide them. if people ask, i explain it to them and that helps then understand me as a person, and what is important to me. size should not matter, only appropriateness. you should be able to walk into a job interview and not have people look at you like a biker chick or a hood rat. so ladies, i preach, be responsible and think about your future whether you are taking the plunge for the first or tenth time. getting tattooed is cathartic for me. when something is troubling me and i need piece of mind and focus, i either design or alter an existing design to fit what it is i need at that moment. do what is best for you, your children/family and your future.

I have 8. Most of them are small and are in intimate places and only one is visible, which is my zodiac sign on my wrist. And yes, I have a “tramp stamp” too. I thought about getting one on my foot, but it seems like EVERYONE is doing it! It's still in the back of my mind.

Honestly, I don't see myself getting any more done. But what I can't stand is people that are in their 40's that decide that they want to get one done.

I don't regret any of them, they look sexy to me.

I think it's too many when your whole body is covered, face included and there is no skin, just all ink.

Too many tattoos take away from who you are, but one to maybe three is okay. However, I love sleeves. Heh. Anywayz, I have one on my inner wrist, and it's small, but it's noticeable. It's nothing racy, evil or controversial, and I haven't gotten any flack from it. Well, a family member tried to question me about it, but my thought is: It's my body, therefore I will do as I please. Overdoing it is crazy though.
