The Down Low

I recently got an email that read “Blogxilla, I’ve recently started checking your page and I see that you frequent topics pertaining to love, relationships and sex. I’d like to hear your thoughts on this Down Low gay sex phenomenon that has become an epidemic in the black and hip hop communities.” When I read the email I tossed the topic around in my mind, honestly tried to come up with reasons why this could be going down.
And I couldn’t come up with a reason. It’s 2008 and we live in a fairly open world, at least in my opinion. I live in Atlanta where gay men are every where, and when it comes to DL lifestyle, I don’t know why a man would feel the need to front. If you look at all things in life you pretty much have two options. Left or Right, yes or no, Obama or McCain.
I firmly believe that if you are going to sh*t in the streets you should be able to stand next to that pile of crap and shout to the world “Hey this is my pile of dookie come look at it.” If you can’t do that then you shouldn’t do it at all. Now one thing may be that men are afraid of what their family and friends might say. Take the rest of the email I received it continued as follows.
I mean, I know what I think as a woman but I’ve never really heard an open discussion on this from a man’s perspective. So what’s the word…Why are these dudes gay as hell like that’s what’s up but still afraid to live out loud? They’re queer, they’re here and we can get used to it…just don’t lie to us about it. It’s not the being gay that’s the problem, it’s the deceit and the dangers it brings. Thanks! I’ll look for your post.
Now the name calling is a bit offense, if you call a straight man queer or even gay they are likely to fight you. No straight man wants to be classified as gay. Which is why you may have never heard a man talk about this topic. Again I do believe that a gay men should come out the closet and just live his life out in the open. I have a few gay friends on myspace and in the blogosphere and a few who I suspect are gay, but that’s their life. If doesn’t effect me who they sleep with, but the DL lifestyle does. If they are sleeping with both men and women and lying to the women about it, it’s a problem. I’ve learned early that if I sleep with anyone in Atlanta I need to wear a condom. Because the same chicks I’m sleeping with are sleeping with dudes on the down low.
A woman deserves more respect than to be lied to, tricked and played a fool. I have no problem with a man sleeping with another man. I’m for gay unions if that’s what these people CHOOSE to do, so be it. I think the only difference in opinion we have is that homosexuality is a choice. I’ll be in the comment section for this one, see you there.
What’s your opinion about the DL Lifestyle.
