The Mason Dixon Line Between Love & Hate

nysmlI first tried to move to Ga back in 98, I had heard plenty of stories about how southern girls just love dudes from up north. Some said it was the Timbos w/ shorts, the “New York” accent or maybe just that up north swagger. This totally distorted my view of the south, I mean I have met plenty of girls who just loved my accent but it was never just as easy as saying I’m from NJ and bam panties start falling from the sky.

Now on my first trip to a social outing was back in Buckhead. (When Buckhead was Buckhead!!!) It wasn’t super easy, but I did run into some fly GA Peaches hung out and scored a few runs w/ some and with others I just got to 1st base. I ended up moving back to NJ but I wouldn’t stay home for long.

Fast foward to 2004 I must have been fed up w/ Jersey b/c I hauled ass out of Dirty Jerz So fast w/ a suitcase and 5 g’s and never looked back!!! Now i’m a Multi Thousandaire who is just loving the south. It’s a whole different atmosphere in the ATL. It’s like the southerners got bigger balls. They are so quick to diss a northener the moment they say anything about how Backwards GA is.

Now Don’t get me wrong I’m FILA all day (Forever I Love Atlanta) but some stuff about GA is just backwards Like 285 a interstate Highway that circles around the city… and for some reason there is always Traffic not just like cars but I mean it’s a freaking Parking lot. I don’t even mind the fact that there are 12,348 different streets name Preachtree. But, the moment I mention the backwardness of this I immediately get “Well why don’t you move back to NEW YORK if you hate ATL so much“

WTF!!! I never said I hate Atlanta I just think some of it is backwards, like how they stop running buses @ 8 o’clock or the lack of sidewalks… ARGGGHH!!!! Now when it comes to the girls it’s harder than ever I don’t know what the up north dudes did since I first came to Ga but now I have bumped into Females who just shut me down the moment I open my mouth and they hear my accent. Oh nah NYer’s are arrogant

At the end of the day when it comes to approaching a woman you have to do it with respect and care. You can’t just assume that because you’re from a certain part of the world you’re going to get the woman. Arrogance is ugly no matter where you are from.

  • HA! I get this too. I am from Maryland (Baltimore/DC). I don't live in Atlanta but in the "metro area" and when I mention how backwards GA can be I get that same response. Im not going to say that being from up north has given me an advantage (the man pool in my area is DRY) but being and thinking DIFFERENT has.

    The accent doesn't hurt either ;-)

    I have always lived below the Mason Dixon line and I can honestly agree that most southern states not just GA are backwards. I get the side eye for being "proper" cause everybody know I can't be from the south talkin like all that...well I am, but proper english was a necessity in my home then and now. Jaila is right, for the most part the mentality (born here, struggle here & die here) is ridiculous.

    Atlanta does have a different vibe to it. Most of the ppl living here were not born and raised (myself included) and it is quite obvious the difference. There are however shiftless, lazy, sorry, uneducated ppl everywhere, not just in the south. There is a good ole boy mentality down here and from the looks of it that won't be changing anytime soon.

    I think part of the problem is not so much the arrogance but the impatience. Meaning, when some northerners (YO Kids as I like to call em = P ) realize that you are not from the place they want you to be the conversation shifts and we as ATLiens feel like we hafta defend our home................I have spoken........lol...

    Speaking as an ATLien (born and raised), we do feel the need to defend our city because a lot of people come with these negative views of the south and often don't even give our culture a chance. Northerners sometimes feel that they are the be all and end all of fashion, music (oh gawd don't get me started), food, and just culture in general. And to think that our people are lazy, uneducated, "I'm never leaving home" bammas is absurd. I've personally lived outside of my birthplace, travel to other counrties and so have many of my friends. And no I wasn't raised in the upper part of the economy. Like homie said above, every city has those unmotivated type of people. You can't tell me the north doesn't have people living in the projects just content as they wanna be. And while I do enjoy visiting other places or temporarily trying them out for residence, my home will still always be ATL. (I guess I fall into the category of having that 'born here, struggle here & die here' mentality huh?)This is where I will always come back to to build my life. After all, there's no place like home.

    Yes, the south is in a lane of it's own. Our lifestyles are not for everyone. But we will love and accept you just the same. Just don't come talkin' backwards about our city. We might chew your a$$ out about it, but when we're through at least we'll still feed you a good home cooked meal. Nothing like that southern hospitality. That ain't no myth. LOL
  • Try moving from the San Francisco Bay Area to ST. LOUIS!?!! Arrgh!! The rail system is not even 10 years old, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton had to boycott on Interstate 70 not even 8 years ago because blacks weren't getting highway construction jobs (and they still don't have them) and native St. Louisans think they are VASTLY different from East St. Louisans which is a 2 minute drive away. Atleast you are in a live ass city like ATL. You can't complain until you move from the multicultural haven that is Cali to a one-light, horse and buggy , still segregated, last place to free the slaves (literally) town like St. Louis!!! I'd rather be there than "herrr"! p.s. I -285 circles the whole metro area and it helps to get to the burbs.

    im from VA (757) and regardless of what people think, VA is far from southern, well i'll say that for the hampton roads area. we have a large military base here, so we have a lot of people from different states. yes i've had my share of navy guys and the northerners and midwest guys are pretty laid back and cool. but the dudes from down south are the most ignonrant men i have ever met. describing some of them as shallow is an understatement. also, the ones i've been cool with (not even slept with) treat and talk about females in the most derogatory manner. they talk extremely loud. its like they must be seen. when me and my friends are out in clubs, restaurants, wherever, u can spot a down south dude immediately, especially if he in the navy. and u can always spot the NY kind of guy b/c he's being quiet and just watching.

    now its different for the females. northern females get loud and buck QUICK! they're quick to shout out what part of whatever city they rep. but down south females do a lot of sh*t talking while walking away. lol

    oooooh and 1 more thing. about being backwards. i was having a conversation with a dark skinned guy from houston. im brown skinned and my cousin is light skinned. this guy said he was feeling me but he'd date my cousin b4 he'd date me b/c "dark skinned men and light skinned women are supposed to be together and the other way around." i was like thats it, no more AMERICAN men for me. u have to have a green card to talk to me now. :)

  • lol... they sholl (<-----) dont got no sidewalks. Im from Cleveland, OH and i spent every other summer in ATL when i was younger (in the Chi the other summers). I appericate having that experience, but i hated walkin to the corner store... (it was hella hott and the store was far AND it wasnt no damn sidewalks, AND when it rain them BIG AZZ flying roaches be errrwhere!) Its been a while ATL... ill c u in Oct. (Chi im coming for u too baby!!)

    agree 100% w. erica about the men + the women.
    I'm a New Yorker, bagel eating, uptown wearing, Dominican blow-out having girl and I moved to ATL to attend school. I'm not lying when 95% of my attraction to the opposite sex must have been left on the East Coast. I'm damn near celibate, and the men I do date aren't from here.
    The female thing is true as well. Just the other day I said to my bff how a lot of the women down here are so two-faced, Northeners are grimey, I prefer it that way...but in my experience the older generation of people in ATL are really nice folks.
    But...I'm jumping on the interstate back home this coming spring whoo-hooo, damn I miss Chinese food + sidewalks...
